Westway Development Trust

Enhancing the lives of those who live and work in the vicinity of the Westway fly-over, via an imaginative, self-financing and long term investment in urban regeneration, innovation and services that benefit our community.

 Westway Development Trust works to benefit the diverse local community in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea. This is done through a wide range of projects & initiatives in areas as varied as school sports, services for minority communities and adult education. The trust works closely with numerous community groups, in partnership with the local voluntary sector and with the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea council. The Trust also runs the Portobello Green Fitness Club. Which brings health and fitness opportunity to every member of our community, including those suffering from illness and infirmity, as well as disadvantaged and neglected groups.

The Trust was founded in 1971 after the A40 Westway flyover was bulldozed through North Kensington within the boundaries of the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, leaving 23 acres of derelict land underneath it. The Trust was established to develop this land for the benefit of the community.

Today, a diverse portfolio of commercial developments, occupying one fifth of the land, contribute to the local economy and fund the Trust's charitable activities. Community facilities range from landscaped gardens to charity offices and from sports & leisure centres to education resource centres, but the Trust does not just deliver buildings, it delivers services such as education, health training, and sport development, out in the community. The Trust began life with a Council grant of £25,000. Today it is a self-sufficient charity with an annual turnover above £6 million , all the ‘profit’ on which is recycled directly into our charitable projects, so that is where your payments to use the Westway Sports centre go !
